Sank, 97, Hooversville, died April 12, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Nov. 1, 1910, in Conemaugh Township, the daughter of Frank and Julia (Litwin) Sank. Preceded in death by parents and brothers, Joseph, Waldo, Andrew and Louis Sank. Survived by niece and nephews, Mary Kathryn, married to Dr. Alfred Legaspi, Clifton, Va.; Joseph Sank, married to the former Magdalene Singel, Ellerslie, Md.; John Sank, married to the former Rebecca Cady, Northeast; special nephew and caregiver, Michael Sank, Seward; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Nellie is a graduate of Stoystown High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University of Pa. and a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She was a teacher at Hooversville High School for 24 years and was the principal at Forbes High School for 15 years. Member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, member of the Hooversville Historical Society, life member of the Hooversville VFW Post 7565 Ladies Auxiliary. Member of the Somerset County and Pennsylvania Retired Teacher's Association and a life member of NEA. Received the Lions Club "Citizen of the Year" Award in 1982 and the Jefferson Award for Community Service. Nellie was a life long member of the Hooversville Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was the organist for more than 40 years. Her church activities include: member of the Legion of Mary, member of the Catholic Daughters of America, member of the Sacred Heart and Altar societies and served on the church council. The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown awarded her the Prince Gallitzin Award in 1990. She also received the Papal Award in 1954 and the Evangelation Award. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Deaner Funeral Home, 976 Barn St., Hooversville, where vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Hooversville. Celebrants, Monsignor Harold N. Biller, the Rev. Karl Kolodziejski, OFM, Conv., and the Rev. Gerald Myers. Committal, Holy Family Cemetery.
