Lumberman Victim when Shotgun in Hands of Partner Was Accidently Discharged Charles R. Sanner, 52, Garrett R.D. lumber dealer, was accidently shot and killed instantly Monday afternoon while on a hunting trip to the Negro Mountains with his two sons and his partner in the lumber business, O. C. Laraway of Rockwood. The charge from a 12-gauge shotgun in the hands of Laraway struck Sanner in the back and some of the pellets passed through the heart and emerged through the chest. Sanner's two sons, Richard, 17, and Robert, 15, were standing near their father at the time he was killed. Laraway and Sanner had combined a hunting and business trip, having arranged to inspect a timber tract in the vicinity of where the accident occurred. Laraway was walking in back of Sanner. He said he started to change his shotgun from his left to his right hand and while doing so the weapon was discharged accidently. Coroner P. C. Dosch, Deputy Sheriff Harry C. Jacobs and Game Protector Millard Crooks conducted an investigation and with the assistance of nine other men carried the body of Sanner more than two and a half miles to a highway. Sanner was about six feet four inches tall and weighed 265 pounds. Coroner Dosch said he will conduct an inquest at a later date. He authorized Dr. George Speicher of Rockwood to perform an autopsy, which revealed that some of the pellets had passed through the heart. The victim of the shooting is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna Sanner, and four children - Richard, Robert, Edmund and Katherine, all at home. Meyersdale Republican, November 23, 1944
