Schaefer was fatally stricken with coronary occlusion near his home one mile west of Grantsville, Wednesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. He was in the car of his son Mark Schaefer as the latter was putting the car in a garage when he slumped over. He was taken to the office of Dr. N. R. Davis, who pronounced him dead upon arrival. Mark and his wife had just arrived from Washington, D.C. Mr. Schaefer was a coal miner all his life. He worked as usual the day of his death, and apparently was in good health. He was employed at Joel A. Beachy's mine for several years. A son of Henry and Christina Schaefer, he was born at Lonaconing, Md. September 18, 1898, and was married to Minta Resh in 1921. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Mark L. Schaefer and Pvt. Cecil S. Schaefer serving with the Army in Korea; a daughter, Audrey, at home; three brothers, Henry Schaefer of Springs, William and Leonard B. Schaefer of Grantsville and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Lohr of Baltimore. Mr. Schaefer was a member of Woodmen of the World Camp No. 41, Grantsville and of the Grantsville Lutheran Church. Funeral services were conducted in the Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon, the Rev. George E. Bowersox, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Harry Yommer and Mrs. Harry Hoover sang "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "It Is Not Death to Die." Pallbearers were members of W.O.W.: Henry Patton, Clayton Edwards, William Baker and Blair Buckel. Interment in the Grantsville cemetery. Meyersdale Republican, November 4, 1948
