Schardt, aged 42, died on Friday morning, Jan. 3, in the Veterans' Hospital, Aspinwall, following an illness which started in 1945. He was born on Oct. 9, 1904, in West Salisbury, a son of John and Catherine (Hommer) Schardt. Surviving are his mother, residing in Neversink, N.Y.; three brothers - John, William and Herbert Schardt, all of Meyersdale, and four sisters - Mrs. R. A. Critchfield, Neversink; Mrs. James J. Judge, McKeesport; Mrs. John Hare, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Fred Miller, Perry, Fla. Mr. Schardt was a veteran of World War II and served 20 months in the U.S. Army, six of which were served in the Italian campaign. The body was brought to Meyersdale and prepared for burial at the W. C. Price Funeral Home, remaining there until services were held at SS. Philip and James Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, with Rev. T. J. Houghton officiating. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery where military rites were accorded him by the V.F.W. and American Legion Posts. Meyersdale Republican, January 9, 1947
