Born Emily Jane Mitchell in Romney, Ind., she lived in western Pennsylvania for most of her life, including Pittsburgh, Hidden Valley, and since 1997, Somerset. Her husband of 66 years, George Brighton Schlotterer, died in 2003. She is survived by three daughters: Susan Whitmyre, Long Beach, Calif.; Sara Ciborski, Temple, N.H.; and Stacy Frazier, Somerset; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, two born within the past month. Her grandchildren are Gabriel Frazier, Somerset; Zoe Singer Rouwen, Brasschaat, Belgium; Ariel Singer Shensa, Pittsburgh; Lauren Ciborski, Philadelphia; Michael Ciborski, Temple; Marian Ciborski, San Diego; and Roland Whitmyre, Long Beach. In her youth Jane was a trained actress, with a B.A. in dramatic arts from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). After raising her family, she traveled extensively, either with her husband or friends, visiting Europe, Egypt, and South America. She actively supported many social justice causes, including the struggle for racial equality in the 1960s and more recently world peace. She was also active on behalf of environmental issues, especially global warming. Throughout her life she was an accomplished craftsperson and artist, working in pottery, sewing and embroidery, and oil painting. She was a devout Christian and member of St. Francis-in-the-Fields Church, and she participated in a weekly medtation group, based on Quaker practice, which she helped form. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to: The American Friends Service Committee (www.afsc.org), the Somerset Humane Society (www.somersetpets.org), or the Environmental Defense Fund (www.edf.org). A memorial service is planned for a later date.
