Jason Lee Schmalz, U.S. Air Force active duty, 29, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Somerset, died Nov. 11, 2006, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson. Born April 20, 1977, in Johnstown, son of Donald L. "Don Rodgers" and Marsha Ann (Bittner) Schmalz-Herman. Preceded in death by father; maternal grandmother, Ella Bittner; paternal grandmother, Martha Schmalz; and grandfather, Stephen Herman. Survived by wife, the former Nicole Kruise to whom he was married for eight years. Also survived by mother; half brother, Brandon Herman; stepfather, Christopher Herman; all of Somerset; maternal grandfather, Earl K., Bittner, Somerset; paternal grandfather, Charles F. Schmalz, Houston; step-grandmother, Mary Herman, Johnstown. Was a first lieu-tenant for the U.S. Air Force at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Ariz., where he was a navigator on a HC-130 and was in the 79th Rescue Squadron. A 1995 graduate of University High School, Irvine, Calif., and a 1999 graduate of Indiana University of Pa. where he was a member of the Acacia Fraternity. Also was in the Civil Air Patrol and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Somerset. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, where a service will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Matthew Deal officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to St. Paul's UCC, 202 W. Union St., Somerset, PA 15501. A Gold Star Service will be held 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
