All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ HERMAN SHOCKEY Herman Shockey, aged 81 years, and for many years a well known resident in Greenville Township, as well as being a lifelong resident of this county, passed away in the Miners' Hospital in Frostburg, Md., at 7:40 o'clock Saturday morning, Nov. 2, after being a patient for a week preceding his death, at that institution, prior to which he spent six weeks in the American Oncologic Hospital in Philadelphia. He had been seriously ill since last June. He was born in Somerset County on September 22, 1865, a son of the late Eli and Margaret (Mazer) Shockey. His father was a Civil War veteran. He was united in marriage with Miss Susan Werner on March 11, 1886, in Garrett County, Md., following which the couple took up housekeeping in Greenville Township, where he followed farming until his retirement several years ago. Mr. Shockey was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was a member for many years of the White Oak Lutheran Church and the Owls Lodge, at Deal. He served for many years as a school director in his home town of Greenville. Mr. and Mrs. Shockey were the parents of nine children, two of whom, Mrs. Samuel Wetmiller, of Berlin, and Miss Mary Shockey, of California - preceded their father in death. Surviving are his wife and the following children: C. Howard Shockey, Meyersdale, R.D. 3; Fred H. Shockey, Frostburg, Md.; Lewis E. Shockey, Sand Patch, R.D. 1; Robert E. Shockey, Meyersdale R.D. 3; Mrs. F. E. Sass and Mrs. Frank D. Hunter, Boswell, and Mrs. Earl Moore, of Fairmont, W.Va. Thirty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survive. He was a brother of Christian Shockey, well-known Stoystown resident and former county commissioner. Funeral services for Mr. Shockey were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the White Oak Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Howard K. Hilner, pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Meyersdale, followed by interment in the church cemetery in charge of Wm. C. Price & Son of Meyersdale. Meyersdale Republican, November 8, 1946
