She had been ill for several years from infirmities incident to old age. She was the third daughter and fifth child of Emanuel and Eliza (Livengood) Gnagey, and was born in the Cove, Garrett County, Md., about three miles east of Accident on what is now known as the Albert Ringer farm, in the year 1859. Most of her youth was spent in the Grantsville community on what is now known as the Samuel E. Hershberger farm, to which the family removed from the Cove in the spring of 1861. In her young womanhood she became the wife of Benjamin Schrock, a fine young farmer of Preston County, West Virginia. The young couple located on a farm near Aurora, W.Va., where four children were born to them and they lived happily until death claimed the husband soon after the birth of their fourth child. In the meantime Mrs. Schrock's two elder maiden sisters, Mary and Sarah Gnagey, had located in Pasadena, California, in 1887, and at their solicitation their mother, Mrs. Eliza Gnagey, after the death of their father, Emanuel Gnagey, some time in the 1890's, and their widowed sister, Mrs. Schrock and her four young children, also went to Pasadena to reside. Mother Eliza Gnagey passed away in Pasadena April 18, 1909. Her oldest daughter, Miss Mary Gnagey, died about ten years later. Miss Sarah Gnagey and Mrs. Schrock and her children continue to live and prosper in the beautiful city of Pasadena. Miss Sarah, now in her 87th year, is the only surviving member of the Emanuel Gnagey family since the death of Mrs. Schrock. Five brothers - John, Jonas, Charles, Lincoln and Eddie - and another sister besides the two deceased above mentioned - Fanny, wife of Joel Hershberger - all having gone to their long rest. All four of Mrs. Schrock's children - Irvin, Effie, Edna and Ruth - survive. All were educated in the public schools of Pasadena and California institutions of higher education. All are individuals of splendid abilities and sterling character and were the pride and joy as well as help and comfort, of their mother during her long years of womanhood - and no children ever had a kinder and more loving and helpful mother than they. The son, Irvin, is a draftsman and technician for one of the big rubber companies operating plants in Southern California. Miss Effie, the oldest daughter has for many years been a teacher of domestic science and economics in Los Angeles and Pasadena schools. She and her mother maintained a comfortable and cozy home together on South Catalina Avenue, Pasadena. Irvin, who is married and has one grown-up daughter, has a fine home near that of his mother. The second daughter, Edna, wife of Benjamin Van Dyke, has been principal of a public elementary school in Los Angeles, for a good many years. The youngest daughter, Mrs. Ruth Dresher, lives in Berkeley, Cal. Her husband is one of State entimologists protecting California fruit and field crops against the ravages of insect pests. Mrs. Schrock was a member of the Church of the Brethren since her girlhood, a devout Christian woman, greatly loved and respected by all who knew her. She was an aunt of J. M. Gnagey of Meyersdale, and beloved first cousin of the senior editor of The Republican, who was most hospitably entertained in her home during his last visit to California nearly five years ago.
