All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/ ________________________________________________ GERTRUDE SCHROCK Miss Gertrude Schrock, daughter of the late Elias and Sarah (Lohr) Schrock, died in the Hazel McGilvery Hospital, Meyersdale, on Saturday, Nov. 5, after an illness of three weeks. Miss Schrock was born in Garrett, attended the Garrett school and was graduated with the class of 1905. She graduated from California State Teachers College and also attended the University of Pittsburgh. She began her career as a teacher in the Garrett Public School where she taught for three years. She then accepted a school in Donora where she taught for seven years. She then took and passed Civil Service examinations and was appointed to a position in the United States War Department at Washington where she worked many years. During the war she spent many hours doing special detail work for which she was highly commended and for which she received a service button and a certificate for meritorious service. She was untiring in her efforts, never shirking her duty nor complaining about long hours required. She was spending a few months vacation at her parental home with her sister, Miss Emma Schrock, when she suddenly became ill and was taken to the hospital. Miss Schrock is survived by her brothers, Lawrence of Rockwood, Lloyd of Washington, D.C., Clyde of Garrett, and two sisters, Edith Schrock Bowman of Washington, D.C., and Emma of Garrett. One brother, Frank, preceded her in death. She was an active member of the Mispah Chapter, Eastern Star, Washington, D.C., of which she was a past worthy matron. She was a member of the Unitarian Church. An Eastern Star funeral service was held at her home in Garrett at 9 o'clock Monday evening, Mrs. Greta Barron, Worthy Matron of Trinity Chapter, Somerset, officiated, assisted by her officers. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. A. J. Replogle, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, officiating. Interment was made in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Johnson and Son of Berlin. Meyersdale Republican, November 10, 1949
