Shaffer, 90, Jenner Crossroads, entered into the presence of his Savior and Lord Jesus Christ Aug. 22, 2002, at Somerset Hospital. Born June 15, 1912, in Jenner Township, son of George and Mary Naomi (Shaulis) Shaffer. Preceded in death by parents; wife, former Sarah M. Lohr, on May 3, 1970; sister, Lillian Friedline; and brother, David. Survived by children, Ruth A. married to Earl Stevens, Boswell RD; Richard G., a missionary pastor in Brazil; and Darlee M., married to Clinton Hay, Friedens RD; grandchildren, David L. Stevens, married to former Pattie Trent, Somerset RD; Debra L. (Stevens) married to Dennis Scheffel, Somerset RD; Heather D. Hay, Los Angeles; and Keith R. and James C. Hay, both of Friedens RD; and great-grandchildren Sharayah, Hannah, Clayton and Jeremy Scheffel, and Mary Beth Stevens. Brother of Nevin, married to former Geraldine Miller, Somerset, Mary Jane Blough, Davidsville, and Myra Shaffer, Somerset. Brother-in-law of Louis Lohr, Fishertown; Lloyd Lohr, Stoystown RD, and David Lohr, Friedens RD. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Longtime active member of Zion-Hoffman Evangelical Lutheran Church, Friedens RD where he served as council member, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, superintendent and custodian. Member of former Jenner Grange and the original Jenner Township 4-H Club. Director Emeritus of the Garden of Memories Cemetery Association. Served as Somerset County Home Farm Manager. Prominent Jenner Township dairy farmer, former Jenner Township tax collector and owner of former Grandpa's Orchard Somerset. He was an avid lifelong hunter. Friends received from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, at Hoffman Funeral Home, Allegheny Street, Boswell. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion-Hoffman Church, the Rev. Kathleen Kuehl officiating. There will be no viewing at the church. Interment, Garden of Memories Cemetery.
