Shaffer, 67, Berlin RD 4, died Jan. 5, 1989, at Somerset Community Hospital. Born April 24, 1921, in Pleasant Hill, son of Walter E. Sr., and Cora (Dickey) Shaffer. Preceded in death by parents, one brother and one sister. Survived by wife of 39 years, the former Jean Lepley, and these children: David E., married to the former Boksoon Ko of Kwangju City, Korea; Richard A., married to the former Linda Wyant, and William R., married to the former Barbara Schardt, both of Berlin RD 4; Mrs. Jerry (Mary) Engle, Meyersdale RD 4; and John A., married to the former Patricia Romesberg, Meyersdale; 10 grandchildren. Brother of Mrs. Raymond (Velma) Romesberg, Dallastown; Iva Shumaker, Mrs. Forrest (Grace) Shumaker, and Mrs. Floyd (Erla) Judy, all of Somerset RD 1; Mrs. Merle (Dorothy) Romesberg and Walter Jr., married to the former Jean Swarner, both of Rockwood RD 1; Mrs. Paul (Violet) Romesberg, Indian Head; Mrs. Fred (Virginia) Harned, Somerset RD 7; and Melvin, married to the former Nancy Marteeny, Berlin RD 4. Prominent Brothersvalley Township dairy farmer. Member and elder of St. Paul's Ridge United Church of Christ and Cemetery Association. World War II Army veteran, having received a Purple Heart in the Phillippine Liberation. Member of Harry Fisher Post 445 American Legion Berlin, Disabled American Veterans Meyersdale, Valley Grange 878, and Valley Senior Extension. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Rev. Robert N. Young. Interment, St. Paul's Ridge Cemetery.
