Shaffer, 76, Boswell RD 1, died July 7, 1985, in Allegheny Lutheran Home. Born June 30, 1909, in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, son of Charles E. and Ellen (Heckman) Shaffer. Preceded in death by parents; wife, former Frieda Belle Hemminger, who died Oct. 24, 1973; and brothers, John and Herbert. Brother of: Charles Earl, Burlington, N.J.; Martin L., married to former Margaret Allen, and Betty, wife of James Allen, both of Canton, Pa.; Elma, widow of Robert Williamson, and Mary, widow of Foster Custer, both of Davidsville; and Laura, wife of Leon Spory, Boswell RD 1; also sister-in-law, Marie Lohr-Eastlake, Johnstown. Lay minister and lifetime member of Benscreek Lutheran Church, where he was a former council president, recording secretary, Sunday School teacher and printed the church bulletins for many years. Served on various Lutheran Synod boards. Recipient of Lutheran Brotherhood Distinguished Service Award and numerous Lutheran Church awards. Army veteran of World War II. Friends received 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home, Main Street, Boswell. Body will be transferred to Benscreek Church for viewing from noon Wednesday until time of service at 1 p.m., the Rev. Arthur L. Mentzer. Interment, Thomas Mennonite Cemetery.
