Shaffer, 83, of Meyersdale died July 5, 2002 at home. Born Sept. 30, 1918 in Meyersdale. A son of the late Nathan and Nora Shaffer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Zella M. (Fullerton) Shaffer and one grandchild. Surviving are his wife, Hilda (Hutzell) Saylor Shaffer; two sons: Robert Shaffer of Cumberland, Md. and William Shaffer of Baltimore, Md.; numerous brothers; four grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Barry Saylor and Gloria Shuck of Meyersdale and David Saylor of York; eight stepgrandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Marines 3rd Division in Guam and Iwo Jima and received a Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. Employed for 32 years at Bethlehem Steel Mill and a member of the Elk-Lick Rod and Gun Club. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the M. Ray Leckemby Funeral Home where service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with a graveside military service. Rev. Glenn Foster officiating. Interment, Union Cemetery. Daily American, July 6, 2002 [S0957]
