Shaffer, 80, of Berlin, a well-known and highly respected citizen died at his home on Main St., Saturday, June 12. He was born in Austin, W.Va. April 6th, 1868, a son of the late Martin L. and Martha E. (Grimes) Shaffer. He is survived by his widow, Anna M. (Hitchens) Shaffer; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Burley, Johnstown; and a brother, Richard Shaffer, Dayton, Ohio. He was a major in the Spanish American War with the 1st W.Va. Volunteers from April 26, 1898 to Feb. 4, 1899. He entered service in World War I November 27, 1917 at Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. as Capt. in the 51st Infantry, 6th Division. He saw action in Vosges and Meuse-Argonne offensives. He was a charter member of Harry Fisher Post No. 445, American Legion. He served as chaplain in the Post for many years. He was affiliated with the Somerset Lodge F. & A.M.; the Berlin Fire Department and 40 et 8. He was a mining engineer and was instrumental in the development of the W. K. Niver Coal Company and later the Brothersvalley Coal Company. He was president and manager of the Berlin Water Company for many years until failing health caused him to resign. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Johnson and Son Funeral Home, the Rev. D. S. Stephan officiating assisted by the Rev. Ira R. Harkins. Interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
