  SHAFFER
  
    Richard V. Shaffer of Bowie, Md., passed away on Wednesday, Sept.
  15, 1999.  He was the beloved husband of Ruth E. Shaffer, devoted
  father of Cheryl L. Brown, and grandfather of Gregory S. Brown and
  Alexis E. Brown of Washington, D.C.  He is survived by two sisters,
  Ruth Hamer and Eileen Knupp of Somerset.  He was preceded in death by
  parents Scott and Edith (Shaffer) Shaffer and sisters:  Mildred
  Shaffer, Evelyn Lambert, Helen Walker, and brother, Harold (Bud)
  Shaffer.  He was retired from Exxon Standard Oil Company.  He was a
  lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and Grace Lutheran Church in
  Bowie.  A private graveside service will be held in the IOOF Cemetery
  in Berlin with Rev. Ralph Landis officiating.  In lieu of flowers,
  contributions can be made to the American Liver Foundation, 998
  Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J. 07009-9990.
