"Red" Shank, 82, of Davidsville, died Oct. 14, 2000 at Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown. Born Feb. 14, 1916 in Johnstown to Ernest and Goldie (Dishong) Shank. Preceded in death by parents, brothers, Roy, Joseph, Albon, John, and Jacob, and infant daughter. Survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Ruth Eash; sisters Sophy Lawrence of Alexandria, Va., and Anita Kelly of Johnstown; sons Wally, married to Sue, Bill, married to Doris, Jim, married to Jenny, and Bob, married to Bonnie; grandchildren Jessica, Joshua, Jonathan, Angela Jake, Miranda, and Logan Shank, Jennifer Wingfield, Jonathan and Jaclyn Ramey, Stephanie and Jason Dorsey. Member of St. David's Lutheran Church. Past president of Somerset County Library Board, former drivers education teacher, coach and athletic trainer at Conemaugh Township for 30 years. An active PSEA and PASR member, also a member of the American Legion, the Connumach Lions Club, the Johnstown Elks, the Lutheran Mens League of Johnstown and a former member of the Camp Sequanota Board of Directors. Graduated in 1934 from Johnstown High School, attended North Central College in Illinois and graduated from Slippery Rock College and the University of Pittsburgh. He was also an Army Veteran of World War II. Walter enjoyed playing baseball on local teams in Cambria and Somerset counties and was an avid bowler. In addition, he was known for his chicken barbecues for the Lions club, neighborhood block picnic and eating out with his friends and family. Family will be receiving friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the George Mason Funeral Home Inc. where the Lions will hold a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. David's Lutheran Church, Bishop Greg Pile and the Rev. Gerald Meyers officiating. Interment, Blough Mennonite Cemetery.
