SHAULIS Fatal Automobile and Motorcycle Collision Somerset College Student Home for Thanksgiving Vacation Dead as Result of Crash Leon P. Shaulis, aged 21, son of Charles A. Shaulis, of Somerset, died Nov. 25th in the Somerset Community Hospital, injuries sustained about 12 hours previously when a motorcycle he was riding collided head-on with an automobile operated by D. J. Coleman, of Stoyestown. The accident occurred about a mile and a half north of Somerset on State Highway Route 53. Shaulis was thrown from the motorcycle to the road, suffering a fracture of the skull and a badly crushed leg. Amputation of the leg below the knee was found necessary. Coleman suffered painful lacerations of the face from shattered glass. According to Coleman, Shaulis was traveling on the wrong side of the road without a headlight. Coleman told the State Police, who investigated the accident, that he did not see the motorcycle until his car was about 25 feet away. He swerved his car to the left of the road, and at the same time Shaulis also turned to the left, the head-on crash resulting. Coleman's story was substantiated by Paul Bentz, Roy Corbitt and Dwight Stutzman, all residents of Stoyestown, who were passengers in the automobile. The four young men were returning to Stoyestown after spending the evening in Somerset. Leon P. Shaulis was a former star athlete of the Somerset High School, having been a member of the football team for three years before matriculating in the California State Teachers' College. He arrived in Somerset, Tuesday evening to spend Thanksgiving Day with his father. He had gone to Friedens to visit friends and was returning home at the time of the crash. Shaulis purchased a motorcycle when he enrolled as a student in the California Teachers' College two years ago and had been going home each weekend. He is survived by his father, his step-mother and a brother, Roy F. Shaulis, of Seward. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Casebeer Lutheran Church, Rev. C. K. Spiggle officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery, in charge of Undertaker Charles R. Hauger of Somerset. Meyersdale Republican, December 3, 1931
