Shaulis, 82, Somerset, passed on Aug. 18, 2004, at home. Born July 13, 1922, in Somerset, he is the son of Harvey and Lucy (Barndt) Shaulis. He is preceded in death by parents, sister Estella Shaulis, Ruth Miller and Matilda Kimmel, and brothers Orlando, Harry and John Shaulis. He survived by his wife, Janice Shaulis, Somerset; daughter Annette, married to Jon A. Barkman, Somerset; granddaughters Meredith and Caitlin Barkman, Somerset; sister Thelma, married to Paul Gardner, Berlin. He was a veteran of World War II, enlisted Sept. 28, 1942, in Company H, 318th Infantry Regiment of the 80th Infantry Division. He was discharged Dec. 15, 1945, with the rank of staff seargent. On July 25, 1950, he was commissioned second lieutentant in the Officer Reserve Corps. He was a 1949 graduate of Temple University, a 1952 graduate of Temple University School of Law and a 1972 graduate of the National College of State Judiciary, University of Nevada. He was appointed judge of Common Pleas Court of Somerset County in 1972. He retired Dec. 31, 2002, with 30 years of service. He practiced law in Somerset for 20 years prior to becoming a judge. He was honored by the Somerset County Bar Association as a 50-year member in November 2003. He was the U.S. Commissioner for the Pa. Western District of Federal Court from 1957 to 1961. He is listed in the Who's Who of American Law, and also held a private pilot's license. He served for 12 years as the legal officer for the Pa. Wing of the Civil Air Patrol as a lieutentant colonel, the military affairs commission of the Pa. Bar Association and on the Mental Health Commission of the State Trial Judges Conference. He receive a commendation from the Pa. Senate in 1984. He was a member of the Somerset Rotary Club, the Somerset County Bar Association, the Pa. Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Lawyer/Pilot Bar Association and the American Judicature Society. He was a member of Lodge 538 of the F&AM, Johnstown, and the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity. He was a past president of the board of directors of the Somerset Country Club and a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Somerset. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home, Somerset. A funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Keith Fink officiating. Interment Somerset County Memorial Park, with full military honors by the Somerset County Honor Guard.
