Shaw Succumbs to Injury and Squire Lowry Passes Suddenly Away - Funeral of Each Largely Attended SALISBURY, Pa., Sept. 27 - Two prominent citizens of Salisbury passed away since the last issue of the Republican was published. The injuries received by H.C. Shaw, mention of which was made in last week's paper, proved fatal and he died in Passavant Hospital, Pittsburg, last Friday morning, after an operation on account of internal injuries. His body was brought home Friday night, and scarcely had the townspeople learned of his death before the news spread that another of the town's most prominent citizens, the venerable Samuel Lowry, Esq., lay dead. H.C. Shaw's Taking Off H. Columbus Shaw met his death by working in an excavation for a coal mine which he was opening on the farm he recently purchased of Norman B. Kelm. The accident happened on Friday, September 16. He was helping his employees to drive a heading when a portion of the roof caved down and he was buried under a mass of slate and earth. He would have perished where he was pinioned by the fallen rock, if not speedily extricated by his workmen. On being removed to his home, Dr. A. M. Lichty gave him surgical attendance, and after consultation with the injured man's brother, Dr. W. P. Shaw, of Berlin, it was decided best to take to Pittsburg for a critical operation. He was taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning of last week, and the operation was performed, but he was unable to recover from the shock, and death ensured at 10 o'clock, Friday. His remains, accompanied by sorrowing relatives, were brought back to Salisbury Friday night for burial. The funeral took place at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Wagner, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. Monn of the Reformed church. There was a very large attendance, many of the relatives and former neighbors of the deceased from Garrett county, Maryland, as well as hundreds from Salisbury and vicinity, being present. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. H. C. Shaw was a native of Garrett county, Md., and was 58 years of age. He was a son of George Shaw, who for many years lived on the "Stone House" farm at Little Meadows, two miles east of Grantsville, and who yet survives and is now living on the Aaron Beachy farm two miles west of Grantsville on the National Pike. Mr. Shaw's early life was spent on the farm with his father. During his early manhood he engaged in the mercantile business in Grantsville. Subsequently he removed to Salisbury and engaged in the feed business at West Salisbury. He soon branched out in business in various lines and became an extensive real estate owner. He had the reputation of being one of the keenest and shrewdest investors in this locality. There was scarcely any line of business or investment that he would not take a hazard at. During his long and active business career, he accumulated much property and his estate is thought to be worth a good deal of money. Mr. Shaw leaves a widow and four children - three daughters and one son - besides his aged father, several brothers and other relatives. Mrs. Shaw is a daughterof Rev. John Meager, a lay Methodist preacher, coal operator and capitalist of Salisbury.
