Sheets, aged 79 years and six months, died Saturday evening, following a brief illness, at his home in Connellsville. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sheets, pioneer residents of Meyersdale, was born May 18, 1862. His father will be recalled by the older residents of Meyersdale, as having for a number of years conducted a wagon-making establishment on North Street, adjacent to his residence property which later was purchased and remodeled by the late Prof. Wm. H. Kretchman. Mr. Sheets attended the local public school and was engaged at various jobs locally until a short time following his marriage, when he located in Frostburg, Md., and was employed in the hotel conducted by the late William Slicer, the eldest of three brothers, all of whom at one time or another conducted hotels in Grantsville, Md., and also in Meyersdale. Upon the retirement of Mr. Slicer as the host of the Frostburg hotel Mr. Sheets took it over and conducted the business for several years, or until his removal to Connellsville, where he secured a position with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad as a brakeman and soon became a conductor. For a number of years preceding his retirement he served as a conductor on the runs between Connellsville and Cumberland. Funeral services, which were largely attended by relatives, friends and members of the Connellsville Division, Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, were held at the Sheets home on Monday evening. The body was brought to Meyersdale on B. & O. train No. 8, due here shortly after noon, Tuesday, and interred in Meyersdale Union Cemetery, the Rev. Dr. R. M. Dunkleberger, pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating at the commital services at the grave. Burial arrangements locally were in charge of R. Reich & Son, Meyersdale morticians. Surviving are the widow of the deceased; six sons and two daughters who reside in Connellsville and other points in western Pennsylvania. Meyersdale Republican, December 24, 1942
