Her death was due to gangrene resulting from inward goiter from which she had long been a sufferer. Mrs. Shelbaer attained the age of 69 years and lived in the vicinity of Meyersdale all of her life. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Shumaker of Berkley's Mills and was married at the age of 16 to Joseph Shelbaer, with whom she lived happily for 53 years. To them were born six children - one daughter, Nettie, (Mrs. H. H. Saylor, of Roscoe, Pa.,) and five sons, William W., of Clarksburg, W.Va.; Robert C., Macdonaldton, Pa.; Orville W., deceased; Alonza H., Colorado, and Ernest L., Brownsville, Pa. The bereaved husband is a French Canadian, a native of the Province of Quebec, who came here when a young man to work for a contractor engaged in building the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad through Meyersdale. After his employment on the railroad ended, he remained here as a farm hand, married Miss Shumaker, settled down in Summit Township and reared a most excellent family. Mr. and Mrs. Shelbaer and their children have all been held in high esteem. Much sympathy is felt for the aged husband who is left alone by the loss of his dear companion, since his surviving children are all living away from here in homes of their own. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and one brother, Harry Shumaker, of Superior, Nebraska, also survive Mrs. Shelbaer. Three sisters and four brothers - Mrs. George Holzhour, of Rockwood, Mrs. William Bowman, of Boynton; Mrs. Harrison Keim, of Bruning, Nebraska; William, Edward and Irvin Shumaker, of Meyersdale, and Alonzo H. Shumaker, of Jerome, Pa., preceded her to the grave, all having died in recent years. Mrs. Shelbaer was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren and was steadfast in her faith in health and sickness until the end. Funeral services were held in the church in which she worshiped, at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. George L. Detweiler, and her former pastor, Rev. T. Rodney Coffman, of Somerset. The obsequies were largely attended. Interment took place in Union Cemetery. W. C. Price was in charge of the burial. Meyersdale Republican, April 3, 1930
