Born in Italy in 1890, he later came to the United States at the age of 10, a poor boy. He started his career as a miner and worked many long and hard days at this craft before he had accumulated sufficient funds to purchase the Somerset House in Meyersdale. Eleven years later, August 1, 1939, he purchased the Colonial House, a handsome four story brick structure, from Mrs. Elsie Kyle of Johnstown. Salesmen and other businessmen traveling out of Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Baltimore, when in this territory, arranged to be in Meyersdale overnight so they could spend a pleasant evening provided by Mr. Sherman. They liked its atmosphere and the friendly manner of the proprietor. His numerous contributions to charity, community projects and other worthwhile institutions, along with his congenial nature gained him many friends. He was the husband of Mary Dickey Sherman, Marblehead, Ohio, and the father of two children, Miss Evelyn Margaret Sherman, who was an assistant to her father, and John, a chemical engineer with the Gulf Oil Corporation, in Texas. A brother, Eugene, and sister, Antoinnette, are living in Italy. He was a member of the Sons of Italy, the Modern Woodmen of America and Loyal Order of Moose. Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock in SS. Philip and James Church, with Father Dravetsky of West Salisbury and Father David of Alverno officiating. Honorary pallbearers were J.H. Bowman, Santo Lucente, Joseph Spataro, Samuel Angelo, Carmen Carouse, Charles Fallon Sr., Harry Dirienzo, James Tuscano, Thomas Bruno and Nat LaCavera. Pallbearers were Ronald D'Este, Albert Testa, Fred D'Amico, George Staub, Joe Foley, George Hady, Augustine Testa and George Gimble. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
