Shippey, 81, Center St., Boswell, died Oct. 13, 2000 at home. Born Oct. 28, 1918 in Buena Vista, Bedford County. Son of Harvey E. and Martha (Keiper) Shippey. Preceded in death by parents, granddaughter Felicia and brothers Elmer, Isaiah and Edward. Survived by wife the former Olive H. Bence; daughters, Kathryn Critchfield and Sandra wife of Jacob Barkley, both of Boswell; son Arthur Edward married to Laura Ludlow, Maumee, Ohio; grandchildren, William Critchfield and wife Becky, Elizabeth and Paul Critchfield. Polly (Shippey) Lowry, Matt and Elisha Shippey, Tim and Sarah Shippey, Lisa June, Leslie Herwig and Lee Barkley, and 16 great-grandchildren. Brother of Leona Bence, Bolivar, Eugene married to Ila Custer, Friedens RD, Floyd, Boswell RD, Cleo Jodlowsky, Taylor, Mich., and Harvey Joe, married to Emma Valentine, Acosta. Observed 63rd wedding anniversary on Oct. 9, 2000. Member of the T.E. Hearn Hunting Camp, Huntingdon. Retired foreman for Davey Tree Co. Army veteran of World War II, having served as a corporal in Co. M47th Infantry 9th Division in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes. Recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman Funeral Home, Main Street, Boswell, where service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Rev. Michael A. Dunlap officiating. Interment, Sipesville Cemetery. Graveside military rites in charge Menoher Post 155 VFW Ritual Team.
