    Edward Merle Shirey Sr., 87, Jennerstown, died March 20, 1997 at
  Somerset Hospital.  Born Dec. 28, 1909 in Boswell, son of Elmer and
  Emma (Walker) Shirey.  Preceded in death by parents; stepfather,
  Charles Fleigle; sisters: Edith Warner, Grace Cunningham and Lula
  Lohr.  Survived by wife, the former Orphabel Shaffer, and these
  children: Yvonne S., wife of William Thomas, Boonsboro, Md., and
  Edward, of Pittsburgh; 2 grandchildren, Scott F. and wife, Charlotte,
  and Matthew D.  Brother of Edna Long, Johnstown.  Member of Zion
  Hoffman Lutheran Church, Jenner Township.  Married for 59 years. 
  Family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 5 p.m.
  Saturday at George E. Mason Funeral Home Inc., Davidsville.  Funeral
  service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church, where
  remains will lie in state from 1 p.m. until time of service, Rev.
  Michael H. Tamorria.  Interment, church cemetery.
