Shirey, killed in action with the U.S. Army at Lido, Italy, on August 1, 1944, was returned to his native land for burial, the body arriving at his home in Cresaptown, Md., on Wednesday, July 28. Pfc. Shirey was born in Boynton, son of Carrie (Bowman) and Harry T. Shirey. He entered the Army on January 29, 1943, and was with the Medical Corps during the first few months of his service. He had been overseas less than four months, when he was killed while serving with the Paratroopers. He was born on April 14, 1923, and was just past 21 years at the time of death. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry T. Shirey, Cresaptown, Md.; by two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Martz, Cumberland, Md., and Miss Ruby Shirey at home; and by four brothers, Chauncey, Cresaptown, Md.; Clifford, Frostburg, Md.; Forrest, Berkley Springs, W.Va., and Harry at home. Funeral services were conducted at his home in Cresaptown at 2 p.m., July 30, with the Rev. Mr. Naff, pastor of the First Brethren Church of Cumberland officiating. Members of the Cresaptown post of the American Legion served as guard of honor and performed the military rites at the burial. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Salisbury, in charge of Mortician Stanley M. Thomas. Meyersdale Republican, August 5, 1948
