Born Aug. 2, 1922, in West Salisbury, he was a son of the late Samuel Curtis and Mabel (Beynon) Showalter. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Esther Bittner, Eleanor Showalter and Mary Lee Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Stark) Showalter; 4 children and 4 grandchildren: John Richard Showalter, married to Lynn Heilengenthal, Topeka, Kan.; Michael D. Showalter, married to Patricia Reckner Showalter, Salisbury and daughter, Scotti; Pamela Bear, married to James Bear, St. Paul, Pa., and son Jeremy; Bradley Showalter, married to Molly Roundsley Showalter, Lewisville, Texas, and son Timothy and daughter, Jessica. Two brothers, Sam and Fred Showalter, both of Salisbury; six sisters: Hazel Garlitz, Salisbury; Felicia Gross, North Ridgeville, Ohio; Harriet Higgins, Canton, Ohio; Linda Shaffer, Glenwood, Md.; Carol Sue Helman, Burlington, W. Va., and Jean Bowers, Treasure Island, Fla. He was owner and operator of Showalter's Village Furniture Store for 33 years, was first mayor of Salisbury, holding the position for 22 1/2 years, instrumental in attaining the New England Gear Works, Professional Building and Salisbury Ambulance Association, where he served as an Emergency Medical Technician for 13 1/2 years and was a charter member of Salisbury VFW and member of American Legion. He was a member of Salisbury Lion Club and Meyersdale Masonic Lodge. Friends received at the Newman Funeral Home Inc. Salisbury from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Summit Mills Grace Brethren Church, with Rev. Albert Valentine and Rev. David Fetter officiating. Interment, Salisbury Cemetery.
