Shumac, son of Wilson and Annie Hochstetler Shumac, died at Mt. Alto Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, D.C., September 8, 1948. He was born in Summit Mills, November 25, 1894, and died at the age of 53 years. He was a member of the Brethren Church since 1907. He was a veteran of World War I, during which he served overseas with the 15th Engineers. Mr. Shumac joined the Treasury Department in 1919, and worked in the Register's office until his illness. In 1922, he was appointed chief of the division of destruction; in 1924 he was made head of the Cancelled Securities Division and in 1925 became assistant to the Register. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the American Legion, Columbia Post, of Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, and one step-daughter, Mrs. James Whitaker, and by his father, W. J. Shumac, and one sister, Mrs. Robert Keim of Summit Mills. Funeral services were held Sunday, September 12, in the Brethren Church at Summit Mills, with the Rev. Gerald Polman officiating. Burial was made in the church cemetery under the direction of H. R. Konhaus, mortician.
