Shumaker, an elder in the Church of the Brethren, died about 6 o'clock last Saturday morning at the home of his son, Harvey Shumaker, 709 Vickroy Avenue, Ferndale Borough, following an illness lasting about two weeks. Mr. Shumaker was in his 75th year. His death was due to heart trouble. He suffered an attack early in May and another one Saturday morning, which proved fatal. Funeral services were held at his late home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. John Ellis, pastor of the Moxham Church of the Brethren, and Rev. S. A. Pearce, of the Conemaugh congregation, officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the Meyersdale Cemetery, the same afternoon. David Franklin Shumaker was born in Meyersdale on December 9, 1857, a son of Abram and Mahala (Snyder) Shumaker, who have been dead for some years. David F. Shumaker was a brother of Henry Shumaker, of Connellsville, and Charles Shumaker, who resides in New York City. Many years ago he was employed as a miller and worked at Meyersdale, Compton's Mill in Elk Lick Township, and at Rockwood before locating at Ferndale some 20 years ago. Mr. Shumaker was employed in the frog and crossing department of the Lorain Steel Company, Moxham, until a short time ago, when he became a pensioner. He was affiliated with the Good Fellowship Club of the Moxham plant. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren for many years and was active in both church and Sunday school work in the Western District of Pennsylvania for a long time. He was ordained an Elder in the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren in 1910 during the pastorate of the late Rev. W. M. Howe, and preached in pulpits in and about the city. At the time of his death he was affiliated with the Moxham congregation. On February 2, 1882, Mr. Shumaker and Miss Emma J. Miller, daughter of M. D. and Elizabeth (Lint) Miller, were married in Meyersdale by Bishop C. G. Lint, an uncle of Mrs. Shumaker. Her death occurred in Ferndale in March, 1929. Her body was removed to Meyersdale for interment in Union Cemetery. Miss Maud Shumaker, a daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Shumaker, died some years ago in Pittsburgh. Besides his brothers referred to above, Mr. Shumaker is survived by two sons, Gilbert and Harvey Shumaker, both married and residing in Ferndale. He is also survived by a granddaughter and a grandson. He was an uncle of Miss Ida Shumaker, the well known missionary in India. Meyersdale Republican, May 26, 1932
