Born Dec. 12, 1917, in Windber, son of Michael and Anna (Knapick) Shuster. Preceded in death by parents; first wife, Ann (Makuch) Shuster; brothers, Andrew, Michael, George, John and Charles; sisters, Anna Hritz and Susan Zahurak; also an infant brother, Joseph; and infant sister. Survived by wife, Nellie (Chmiel) Shuster, son, Nick Shuster, Florida, stepchildren, Frank Zeglin Jr. and wife, Tammy; Marie, wife of Andy Roman; David Zeglin and wife, Anita, all of Windber; and Stephen Zeglin and wife Cindy, Belmont. Also survived by grand-daughters, Jacqueline Morgan and Heather Shuster; step-grandchildren, Chris, Andrew and Stephen Roman, Krista and Lisa Zeglin, Brenda Marian and Stephanie Zeglin, Jennifer Zeglin, Kayleigh and Alyssa Tyson; great-grand-son, Don "Auggie" Morgan; great-grandchildren, Christian, Johnathan and Emily Roman. Also special nephew, Dr. John Shuster and wife, Fran. Nick was a U.S. Army-Air Force veteran of World War II, where he served as a staff sergeant in the 1020th Army-Air Force base unit as an airplane engineer and top turret gunner. His squadron was involved in more than 25 combat missions over the Rhineland, Manila and the Philippines. He was awarded the Combat Crew Flying Badge, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. He also received the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was a retired coal miner from Longwall Mining Co. and also was a former partner of Shuster Coal Co. in Hillsboro. Member of UMWA, and 50-year member of Windber American Legion and member of Windber VFW. Member of SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Windber. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber. Brief service 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by burial service at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Windber. The Very Rev. Protopresbyter David J. Smoley officiating. Interment church cemetery with graveside military honors by Windber VFW. Panachida service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
