Sifford Had Been Engaged in Business in Somerset for Over 40 Years John H. Sifford, 72, veteran Somerset merchant, died at 12:30 Wednesday morning in Community Hospital, where he had been a patient since Friday. Death was attributed to an embolism. Mr. Sifford had been in failing health for some time, but was able to take care of his business until last week. He had operated a dry goods store for more than 40 years. John H. Sifford was a son of John and Susan (Hunt) Sifford and was born in Frederick, Md., on November 19, 1867. He received his early education in the public schools in Frederick and later attended Frederick Academy. He traveled as a salesman for a Baltimore concern and during trips to Somerset decided to locate here. On June 15, 1896, John H. Sifford and Mary Martin were united in marriage in Somerset. His wife passed away June 15, 1925. Surviving are three sons - J. Hunt Sifford, Baltimore, Md.; Herbert Sifford, Greensburg, and Holmead Sifford, at home. He also leaves three grandchildren, Louise and Agnes Sifford, Baltimore, Md., and Barbara Sifford, Greensburg, and a brother, Charles Sifford, Frederick, Md. Mr. Sifford was an Episcopalian by faith, but attended the Trinity Lutheran Church during his residence here. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was deeply interested in the work of the Children's Aid Society here. Each year since the death of his wife, Mr. Sifford furnished the Thanksgiving dinner for the children at the home in memory of his wife. Funeral services were conducted at 7:30 o'clock Wednesday evening at the Hauger Funeral Home, Rev. I. Hess Wagner, D.D., pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. George L. Roth, D.D., pastor of St. Paul's Reformed Church. The remains were taken to Frederick, Md., Thursday for burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Thursday afternoon. Meyersdale Republican, February 1, 1940
