Jean is survived by her husband of 58 years, Earl Slanker; and four children, Andrew, married to Karen Brown, Charleston, S.C.; Meg, married to Jim Moses, Somerset; Janet Slanker, Harper, Kan.; and Tom, married to Julie VanArsdale, Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her brother, Peter Riggs, Danbury, Conn.; sister Karen Bowles, Killington, Vt. Her brother, Robert of Maynard, Mass., predeceased her. Jean was born in April 1926 in Bronx, N.Y. and later moved to the Boston area. She was the oldest of four children born to Oliver and Irene Riggs. A 1943 graduate of Westfield High School, Mass. She then continued her education at Purdue University where she received her bachelor's degree in home economics in 1948. She was a member of the Alphi Xi Delta Sorority, in 1967 she obtained a teaching certificate from West Chester University in Pennsylvania. She was active in many organizations: Past President of Panhellenic Alumnae Association of Schenectady, N.Y.; Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae Association, Quilters Group, League of Women Voters, Garden Club, Book Club and Capital District Women's Investment Club. She taught English as a second language to many immigrants gaining their U.S. citizenship. As a volunteer, Jean devoted numerous hours to literacy groups, hospital affiliations and Episcopal Church Sunday School. She was an avid golfer, bridge player and bowler.
