Slicer, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Rutter, at Martinsburg, W.Va., on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the age of 85 years and 12 days, having been born at Somerfield, Pa., Dec. 25, 1845. She was a daughter of Julius and Rhoda Kemp, well known pioneer residents of Somerset County. After her marriage to John H. Slicer of Meyersdale, she and her husband conducted the Union Hotel on Main Street, this city, for many years, until the death of Mr. Slicer, about 25 years ago, after which she bought a home on North Street where she resided during her widowhood. Her death was due to infirmities incident to old age, and was probably hastened by a fall on a stairway of her home several weeks ago. She went to Martinsburg, W.Va., to spend the holidays with her son-in-law and daughter and was getting ready to return home when she was overcome by her final illness, her death being rather sudden and unexpected. Her remains were brought to Meyersdale Thursday afternoon, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Rutter. Funeral services will be held at her late home, which is occupied by her son, James B. Slicer, and family, at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, followed by interment in Union Cemetery. Undertaker W. C. Price has charge of the burial arrangements. Mrs. Slicer was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was very highly respected by all who knew her. She was a woman of superior intelligence and was a capable administrator of her home and business interests. As a wife and mother, neighbor and friend, she was all that one could wish, diligent and faithful in and to all her duties and obligations. She leaves one son, James B. Slicer, of Meyersdale; one daughter, Lelia M., Mrs. William H. Rutter, Martinsburg, W.Va., and four grandchildren. She is survived, also, by two brothers - Beason H. Kemp, of Titusville, Pa., and Richard E. Kemp, of Meyersdale. Three brothers, Charles Kemp, of New Castle, Pa., Butler Kemp, of Somerset, and Milton Kemp, of Uniontown, and three sisters, Mrs. Hannah Norrison of Morrison, Iowa, Mrs. Kate Dennison of Uniontown, and Mrs. Sarah Morrison of Meyersdale, preceded her to the grave.
