Smart of Philadelphia, died at her home in Oakland, Md., Tuesday morning, March 29, after suffering a heart attack March 22. Born in Grantsville, July 31, 1895, she was a daughter of the late John O. and Anna (Dorsey) Getty. She attended the public schools of Grantsville and was graduated from Frostburg State Teachers College and the University of Maryland. She also attended the University of Pennsylvania. She taught school in Garrett County for ten years prior to her marriage. For the past ten years, she had been employed in the office of the Garrett County Welfare Board in Oakland. December 31, 1926, she married James K. Smart, who passed away August 2, 1937 in Philadelphia. Surviving are four children; James Getty Smart, student at St. Charles College, Baltimore; Miss Molly Smart at Towson State Teachers College; Sarah and Ann Smart at home. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. J. F. (Wilda) Fahey of Grantsville, and two brothers; William D. Getty of Grantsville and Frank J. Getty, high school principal at Hancock, Md. Mrs. Smart was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, a past president of the Blessed Mother Sodality of Oakland. A requiem High Mass was offered on Thursday morning at nine o'clock at St. Peter's Church, Oakland, by the pastor, the Rev. Fr. Michael Carney and the Rev. Fr. David Dressman of Grantsville St. Stephen's Church. Graveside services in Grantsville cemetery were in charge of the Rev. Fr. Dressman. Among those attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Getty, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Casper, Hancock, Md.; Mrs. E. H. Reppert, daughter Nancy, Flemmington, W.Va.; Mrs. E. E. Criswell, Clarksburg, W.Va.; Mrs. Harry Hostetler, Wheelwright, Ky.; Mrs. Eugene Hostetler and O. G. Getty, Meyersdale, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Getty, Rockwood; Mrs. Sara R. Getty, Somerset; Mrs. George Hughes, daughter Ann, Cumberland; Mrs. Maurice Brookhart and Mrs. Ernest Liller, Oakland; Mrs. Catharine Smart, Philadelphia. Meyersdale Republican, April 7, 1949
