Smith, 80, died Friday noon 12:15, Jan. 31, at his home in Summit Township near Meyersdale. He was a son of John and Anna Catherine (Saas) Smith and was born in Summit Township on September 14, 1860. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Eleanor (Rumiser) Smith, and these children: Annie, wife of John Harding, Summit Township; Mrs. Thomas Carter and Mrs. A. D. Saylor, both of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. H. L. Claybaugh and Mrs. H. L. Banson, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and John F. Smith, Jerome. Eleven grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Henry Siehl, Somerset, also survive. The deceased had been an active member of the Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church here for 64 years. He served as deacon of the church and also was a teacher in the Sunday school. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Amity Evangelical and Reformed Church by Rev. Nelson C. Brown, pastor, assisted by Rev. B. A. Black, D.D., former pastor. Interment was in Reformed Cemetery under the direction of W. C. Price & Son, local morticians. Mr. Smith's death was due to heart dropsy. He was seriously ill for about three weeks. On account of his condition, which came on suddenly, his daughters, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Saylor, were sent for and were here to help with the care of their father the last two weeks of his life. Mr. Smith was a highly respected citizen of this community, one who exemplified the Christian life to a high degree. He was a good neighbor, a faithful member and zealous worker in the Reformed church, and a loving and kind father and husband. Meyersdale Republican, February 6, 1941
