She was born April 18, 1905, in Stewart Township, Fayette County, a daughter of the late William and Harriet (Johnson) Rowan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ralph Smith; daughters, Marie Tressler and Virginia Smith, a son, William Robert Smith, granddaughter, Carol Whiting, grandson, Michael Smith, stepchildren, Kenneth, Glenn, Carl and Marion Smith, a brother, Francis Rowan, and sister, Mae Dale. She is survived by daughters, Clara Calvert and husband John, of Xenia, Ohio; Anne Grafton and husband, Charles, Cloquet, Minn., and Shirley Uphold of Fontana, Calif., sons, Donald Smith and wife, Lillian, Two Harbors, Minn., and James Ralph Smith Jr., and wife, Berdine of Confluence, a stepdaughter, Louise Lenhart of Beaufort, S.C., 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Aileen Conn of Somerset. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Uniontown. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Humbert Funeral Home in Confluence, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Paul Frank Jr. officiating.
