Smith, 89, of Melcroft, died Nov. 28, 1998, in the Winder Medical Center, Windber. He was born Aug. 16, 1909, in Meyersdale, a son of the late Julius and Ann Catherine (Barnhart) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Robert Carl Smith; five brothers, Robert, Milton, George, James and Paul Smith; and 6 sisters, Ethel Smith, Hazel Ryman, Margaret Ryman, Viola Berkey, Mary Strawn and Madeline Hunter. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gwyenne Roberts Smith; a son, Julius J. Smith and his wife, Wanda, of Youngstown, Ohio; and a daughter, Barbara Wiltrout and her husband, Darrell of Scottdale; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. He worked as a coal miner for Eastern Gas and Fuel Co. and its Melcroft Mine. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1742 in Jennerstown and was a former member of the Somerset Eagles 1801. He was a member of Davistown United Methodist Church and had served on its board of trustees and was past president. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the Clyde Brooks Funeral Home Inc., Route 711, Melcroft, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
