    Clara B. Chitester Smith, 69, Malvern, Ohio, died Sept. 2, 1997, at
  her home.  Born Feb. 3, 1928, in Springhill Township, Fayette County,
  daughter of the late George and Virgie B. (Goodwin) Mates.  In
  addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first
  husband, Charles Chitester, a son, Robert Dale Chitester stepfather
  Howard Artice and sister, Anna Mates Fazenbaker.  Survived by her
  husband, Charles L. Smith, and these children: James A. Chitester and
  Viola V. Rowley, both of Janesville, Wisc.; Bonnie J. Brocht,
  Rockwood; Judy A. Rugg, New Philadelphia, Ohio; Virgie L. Moore and
  Edward E. Chitester, both of Carrollton, Ohio; John L. Chitester,
  Minerva, Ohio; 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; three
  sisters: Ida B. Smith, Strasburg, Ohio; Flossie Tressler, Addison;
  Leona Sterner, Confluence and two brothers: Tillman Mates, Akron,
  Ohio and Lawren Mates, Canton, Ohio.  Friends will be received at the
  Humbert Funeral Home, Confluence, Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and Friday
  from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the hour of service, with the Rev. Douglas
  Baker officiating.  Interment, Addison Cemetery.
