Smith, 71, of 607 Fairview Ave., Gettysburg, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1993, at his home. Husband of Sara Shaffer Smith. Born in Martinsburg, the son of the late Elvin and Mary Ritchey Smith. Member of St. James Lutheran Church and church council; past Sunday School superintendent. Former member of board of Gettysburg Area School District. One of first members of Gettysburg Recreation Park board of directors. Member and past president of Masonic Lodge 358, Somerset; Harrisburg Consistory and Scottish Rite Lodge. In 1940, he started work at Adams Electric Cooperative and was employed for 20 years. In 1960, he moved to Somerset and became manager of Somerset Rural Electric Cooperative. He served as director of Somerset Trust Bank and the Rotary Club. Chosen as Man of the Year by Somerset Grange. Moved to Huntingdon in 1968 and was employed as a manager of the Valley Rural Electric Cooperative. Member of the National Rural Electric Association board for 17 years, the Huntingdon Rotary Club and served on the Huntingdon Hospital Authority board. Retired in 1990 in Huntingdon and then moved back to Gettysburg. Survived by four children: Sally A. Crist and Janet S. Berkey, both of Gettysburg; Kay Little of Orlando, Fla., and Jay D. Smith of Huntingdon; nine grandchildren, one sister, Margie Spotts of New Holland, and one brother, Eugene Smith of Leottardtown, Md. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, with the Rev. E. Edward Keyser officiating. Interment in the Evergreen Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
