Smith, DDS, (known as "Doc" to his friends), passed away June 17, 2008. On June 8, he celebrated his 80th birthday. Dr. Smith practiced dentistry in Confluence for 47 years. He and his wife, Helen, retired and moved to Somerset in 2002. Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and two sons, Freddie and David. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years; two daughters, Patricia and her husband, Ray Mishler, Charlottesville, Va.; and Audrey and her husband, Eric Sadler, Somerset; four wonderful grandchildren, Cassi, Evan, Erin and Tristan, to whom he will always be their "Pap." Dr. Smith was a lifetime member of the American Dental Society, the Pennsylvania Dental Society. He was a member of the Confluence United Methodist Church for 47 years and more recently a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Somerset. For more than a half century, Dr. Smith was a member of the Masons and the Confluence Lions Club. He was a life member of the Confluence Fire Department. Dr. Smith was also a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the Army of occupation forces in Korea. Dr. Smith was involved in many aspects of civic life, including his service of six years as mayor of Confluence and 16 years on the General Authority of Somerset County. His other community activities ranged widely. One could always depend on Doc Smith. Dr. Smith was an avid golfer and bowler and at One time shared part ownership of Middlecreek Golf Course. He was a great fan and supporter of the Pitt Panthers. During these last few years, he and Helen enjoyed their involvement at the Somerset Hospital as active volunteers. Doc Smith was a man to always be counted on ... in the community to man the hot dog stand, sell raffle tickets, or to step up and serve in a necessary community endeavor ... in his church to chair a committee or see to needed repairs ... in his profession to mentor new doctors or dentists ... and in his family to share his love, humor and great wisdom. His time on this earth has touched so many and his eternal rest a well deserved thanks for his service, love and faith. Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Miller's Funeral Home, Somerset. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Somerset. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
