"Smitty" 06/14/08 Daily American James D. "Smitty" Smith, 76, Hollsopple, died June 12, 2008, at Windber Hospice. Born May 1, 1932, in Johnstown, the son of Virgil E. and Margaret E. (Dollard) Smith. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Thomas, Edgar, Ralph and William; and sister, Mary Catherine Scott. Survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Gwen Goughnour; and these children, Kevin J. and wife, the former Monica Kordell; Seymour, Tenn.; Mark G. and wife, the former Natalie Kulick, Davidsville; Craig D. and wife, the former Laurie Marks, Dunlo; Jeffery M. and wife, the former Patricia Anderson, Windber; Melissa M. and husband, Douglas, Miller, Dauphin; and Karen J. and husband, William Wydra, Dover, Ohio. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Brother of Margaret "Peg" Ream, Johnstown. Member of St. Anne Catholic Church. He was a member of the 628 Tank Battalion Medical Detachment in Germany ULM during the Korean War. A former president of the Knights of Harmony Chapter of SPEBQSA. A former city fireman with Johnstown. He enjoyed hunting, model trains, gardening and woodworking. He was an avid fisherman following the three rules of fishing: Any weather, any lake, any time. Family receiving friends from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the George E. Mason Funeral Home Inc., Davidsville, where vigil for the deceased will be held in the afternoon. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Lewandowski, O.F.M. Conv., officiating. Committal Grandview Cemetery. Military graveside service.
