Smith died at his home in West Salisbury at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, August 6. He had been in ill health since about the first of the year. Several months ago, he returned from Detroit, where he was working, for an operation, but little could be done for him, and he gradually declined in health until his passing. He was born in Salisbury on January 2, 1890, a son of Lydia (McKenzie) and Andrew J. Smith and was 58 years, seven months and four days old at his death. He was married to Emma (Harding) Smith, who preceded him in death in 1934. He was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, West Salisbury. He worked at a number of trades, but in recent years, chiefly at carpentering. He was always in a good humor and was noted for his Irish wit. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Orner, West Salisbury; by two sons, Allen Smith, Detroit, Mich., and L. Robert Smith, U.S. Air Force, Sacramento, Calif.; by one brother, Lawrence Smith of West Salisbury; one sister, Edna Smith, postmistress of West Salisbury, and by four grandchildren. Funeral mass was said for him by the Rev. Father O'Toole in St. Michael's Church, West Salisbury, at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 10. Interment was made in the church cemetery in charge of Mortician Stanley M. Thomas. Meyersdale Republican, August 12, 1948
