Smith, 94, Titusville, Fla., formerly of Garrett RD, died June 23, 2005, at his residence. Born March 28, 1911, in Keystone Mines (Meyersdale), son of Oscar D. and Ruth G. (Whorrel) Smith. Preceded in death by his parents, son Robert E., grandson Michael J., brothers Charles and Raymond, half brother Ray, sisters Velma Lehman and Helen Hogan, and half sister Mable Miller. Survived by his wife of 70 years the former Pauline Naomi Judy; sons Donald E. married to the former Marlene Wiley, Merritt Island, Fla., Jerry P. married to the former Donna Miller, Buffalo Mills; daughter Suzanne Chutis, Titusville, Fla., seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; sisters Viola Krug, Somerset, Edna Eutsey, Scottdale; a brother Charles O. Kinnan, Connellsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of World War II retiring from the Navy in 1971 after 43 years of active and reserve duty, retiring with the rank of chief warrant officer. A retired member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of the VFW Robert Walker Post 7295 and American Legion Harry Fisher Post 445, both of Berlin. He was also a member of the former Church of the Brethren, Garrett. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where a service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Jay Christner officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Beachdale Cemetery.
