She is survived by her husband, Col. (USA, Ret.) Lawrence R. Smith. The couple frequently visited Meyersdale where Col. Smith still owns a home on Beachley Street. Mrs. Smith was a native of Washington D.C., the only children of William and Susan Kuhns. She married Meyersdale's Lawrence Smith, the youngest child of Robert and Maude Smith in 1954. As an Army family, the Smiths lived in several states and a number of cities in what was then West Germany. Military assignments kept them in northern Virginia for many years and it is there that they retired. Church, school and community activities kept Mrs. Smith busy wherever she lived. She taught Sunday school for nearly 20 years and worked on 30 bazaars at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Springfield. Her hobbies included needlework and genealogy. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is also survived by her son, J. Michael Smith of Herndon, Va.; her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Steven Somers and her grandson, Kevin Somers, all of Mount Vernon, Wa. Interment, Arlington National Cemetery.
