    Thelma L. Smith, 79, New Baltimore, died Nov. 15, 1997 at her
  home.  Born Nov. 7, 1918 in Juniata Township, Bedford County. 
  Daughter of the late Harry and Amanda (Fritz) Shaffer.  Also preceded
  in death by husband, Thomas W. Smith, who died Dec. 11, 1989; four
  brothers, Orval Shaffer, Hubert Shaffer, Marcy Shaffer and Floris
  Fritz; 2 sisters: Olive Smith and Mabel Bennett.  Survived by sons: 
  Thomas E., married to the former Janet Perdew, Everett RD 1; Harold
  "Ed" married to the former M. Jane Dibert, Bedford; Robert, married
  to the former Maxine McKinley, Berlin; Joseph, married to the former
  Cathy Leister, Fairhope RD 1; daughters, Norma J., wife of Donald
  Lynch, New Baltimore; Shirley Bruck and friend Don Zerfoss, Fairhope
  RD 1; Beverly J., wife of Richard Oehling, Somerset.  Also a sister,
  Valeria Vogdes, Schellsburg.  15 grandchildren and 10 great
  grandchildren.  Member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, New
  Baltimore.  Viewing from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at
  Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg.  Wake service at 8:30 p.m.
  Monday at funeral home.  Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday
  at St. John the Baptist Church, the Rev. Mark Begly, celebrant.
