SMOUSE Charles Ray Smouse, 89, of Stringtown RD 1, died Sunday, February 24, 1985 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Maryland. Born in the Cumberland Valley on Jan. 28, 1896, he was a son of the late Jerome W. Smouse and Emma (Beal) Smouse. He was retired from the maintenance department of the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company at Cumberland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War I; he served as a boatswain on the USS Wyoming. After the war, Mr. Smouse served in the U.S. Army. He was the last surviving World War I veteran who was a member of the Oscar Jordan Post 7375 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his widow, Mary E. (DeVore) Smouse. Friends were received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home where services were conducted by the Rev. Fay E. Leydig. Interment, Palo Alto Cemetery. Graveside military rites were accorded by VFW Post 7375 and members served as pallbearers. The Republic, February 28, 1985 [S2227]
