Mortimore Smouse, aged 74 years, died Tuesday, July 19th, at the home of his niece, Mrs. Algie Plummer, at Westernport, Md. Death was due to heart trouble and a complication of diseases. Mr. Smouse was a son of the late Daniel and Priscilla Livengood Smouse. He was born in this community, and lived almost his entire life here. He was a shoemaker by trade and was well known and respected throughout the county. As a workman in his line he had few equals, and he made new shoes for many customers. Several months ago he went to Oakland, Md., where he made his home with his nephew, Daniel Smouse. Five weeks later he went to Westernport to visit his nieces, Mrs. Algie Plummer and Mrs. Fay Plaugher, and became so ill while visiting in that town that he died there. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Grantsville Methodist Church, with Rev. A. C. Bell in charge. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, and H. C. Edwards and Stewart Rodamer. Burial was in the Grantsville Cemetery. Those who survive are a sister, Miss Jane Smouse, Oakland, Md.; two brothers, Reed, of Oakland, Md., and Howard, of Westernport. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Meyersdale Republican, July 28, 1932
