Sommers, 73, of Springs, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at Somerset Hospital, Somerset. He was born December 21, 1933, in Cochranton, a son of the late Eli I. and Malinda (Yoder) Sommers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catharine (Maust) Sommers, two sons, Virgil Wayne and Eugene Lavern Sommers; one daughter, Shirley Anna Sommers; one granddaughter, Heather Marie Yoder; four brothers and seven sisters. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Jane (Fisher) Custer Sommers; one son, Leroy Allen (Kathy) Sommers, McGaheysville, VA; two daughters, Elsie Marie Sommers, Tulsa, OK; Twila Fern (Ron) Yoder, Millersburg, IN; three step sons, William (Bonnie) Custer, Jr., Monroeville; Ed (Lisa) Custer, Meyersdale; Clyde (Shannon) Custer, Salisbury; three step daughters, Joy (Doug) Miller and Amy (Don) Blough, all of Salisbury; Lori (John) Kabina, Meyersdale. Two brothers, Menno Sommers, Cochranton; Leroy E. Sommers, Sarasota, FL; three sisters, Sarah Mae Lockridge, Knightstown, IN; Susie Turner, Montgomery, AL; Dorothy Tice Hershberger, Bradenton, FL; two sisters-in-law, Malinda Sommers, Portland, OR; Ada Sommers, Cochranton; one foster brother-in-law, Victor Overholt, Minerva, OH; one foster sister-in-law, Rachel Raber, Hartville, OH; eight grandchildren, Kevin (Rachel) Sommers, LaVonne (Monte) Heatwole, Lori (Joel) Slaymaker, Keith, Kent and Kervin Sommers; Jesse and Preston Yoder; four great- grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Renae Sommers; Ryan and Tyler Heatwole; 12 step grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. Mr. Sommers was a member of Oak Dale Mennonite Church. He was a retired meat cutter for Yoder's Locker Plant, Grantsville, MD. He was also a member of Salisbury Area Ambulance Association and Salisbury Fire Dept. Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, MD, where services were conducted at Maple Glen Mennonite Church, Grantsville, MD, with the Rev. Philip Moser, the Rev. Joe Byler and the Rev. Ivan Maust officiating. Interment was in Maple Glen Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to World Missionary Press. A service will be conducted noon Saturday at Maple Glen Mennonite Church, Grantsville. The Rev. Philip Moser, the Rev. Joe Byler and the Rev. Ivan Maust officiating.
