Spangler, 80, Hollsopple, died Dec. 5, 2005. Born Feb. 3, 1925, in the caretaker's home of the Quemahoning Dam, where his grandfather was the first caretaker and his father was the second. Son of the late Morris and Fanny Thelma (Gilbert) Spangler. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Robert; and sister, Georgeann Lape. Survived by wife of 58 years, the former Anna Ruth Lybarger; children, Tim and fiancˇe, Kimberly Lawn, Richland; Barry, married to the former Mary Ann Panik, Salix; and Valerie, married to Frank Webb, Richland. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Brother of Evelyn Sumner, Pittsburgh, and George, Davidsville; and sister-in-law, Jill Spangler, Westmont. He was a member of Maple Springs Church of the Brethren, where he was a former trustee and active in the Willing Workers Sunday school class and Men's Fellowship. He was also active in the Conemaugh Township Historical Society and did volunteer work with St. Francis Sharing and Caring Center in Davidsville and Hollsopple. He was unable to graduate from high school because of volunteering for the U.S. Army in World War II. In 2001, along with several other World War II veterans, he was awarded a high school diploma from the Conemaugh Township High School through the Belated Graduation Operation Recognition Program. During World War II, he served with the 153rd Engineering Battalion in the Philippines and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was a member of the Hollsopple VFW and Jerome American Legion. He was a heavy equipment operator, belonging to Local Union 66 and was also a heavy equipment instructor for the Operating Engineers at their training site in New Alexandria, Pa. Family receiving friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the George Mason Funeral Home Inc., Davidsville. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Maple Springs Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Rodger Forry officiating. Interment, Maple Springs Cemetery.
