Spangler, 88, joined the Parade of Saints from the Oaks Skilled Nursing Facility of Bethany Village West in Mechanicsburg. Born in Somerset, Sept. 7, 1917, she is the daughter of the late William Peter and Mae. (Peck) Speicher. Along with her parents, Lois was preceded in death by three brothers, Dwight, Glenn and Paul. She is survived by three daughters, Carol Lowry Spangler, State College; Marcia (Rudolph) Sharpe, Hummelstown; and Denise (Edwin) Zechman, Oak Hill, Va.; and one son, Jack (Beverly Gerhardt) Spangler, Nashville, Tenn. Also surviving are the following grandchildren, Eric (Marta Villarraga) Lowry, Ardmore; Mardi (Erik) McDonough, State College; Stefanie (Clark) Comperry, Dayton, Ohio; Todd (Jackie West) Spangler, Nashville, Tenn.; Amy Sharpe, Hummelstown; Jeremy (Amy McMillan) Sharpe, Austin, Texas; Brad Zechman, Philadelphia; and Maegan Zechman, Tampa, Fla. The following great-grandchildren survive their "Great Nana," Jonathan, Jessica and Justin Comperry, and Colleen and Grace McDonough. Lois married Vernon M. Spangler, retired Somerset County dairy farmer and County Commissioner, on April 12, 1941, in Somerset. She was a 1935 graduate of the Somerset High School. As an accomplished pianist and the winner of several forensic piano contests, Lois received her piano teaching certificate from the St. Louis Conservatory. She passed along her love of music, which she inherited from her mother, to her four children. Lois was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Linglestown, singing in their choir for many years, prior to their move to the Harrisburg area in 1981. She was the organist and choir director at both the Lambertsville and Shanksville, Lutheran churches. While living in Stonycreek Township, Lois was a 4-H leader affiliated with the Penn State Extension Service, and was a member of the 4th Society of Farm Women, having been named Somerset's "Farm Woman of the Year." She was also a chairperson for Stonycreek Township Red Cross fundraising events. While living in the Harrisburg area, Lois belonged to the Linglestown Garden Club, where she received many awards for her lovely rose garden and natural talent for floral arrangements. She organized a group called the "Crafty Crafters" at Christ Lutheran Church, Linglestown, and the "Mother's Bereavement Blanket Project" for Harrisburg Hospital. Also an accomplished seamstress, she created wedding gowns for her three daughters, tailored suits for her husband, son and sons-in-law, and quilts and wall hangings for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At Lois's request, there will be no visitation. A celebration of her life will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 1214 Crosby Street, Linglestown 11 a.m. Monday. The burial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Somerset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 1214 Crosby Street, Linglestown, PA 17112, or to the "Care Assurance Fund" of Bethany Village, 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
