Born May 2, 1929 in Hyndman, he was the son of the late Walter Michael Spangler and Elsie Viola Bittner Spangler. He was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the military, he was employed by the Computer Science Corporation and the U.S. Government at Fort Ritchie. He was a member of the Greensburg United Methodist church and Bible study group. He leaves one son and daughter-in-law: John Stephen and Nancy Spangler, Hedgeville, W.Va.; four step-children: Melvin J. White II, Germantown, Md., Elaine Wilkinson, Aspen Hill, Md., Janice Smith, Martinsburg, W.Va., Sharon Schmedicke, Frederick, Md.; two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Alma Deba Spangler, his second wife, Ethel Virginia Spangler, and one brother: John W. Spangler. Burial with full military honors will be held at 3 p.m. April 21 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with Rev. John R. Yost, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, W.Va. from 7 to 9 p.m., April 11.
